What is the difference between a babysitter and a nanny?
Babysitters care for children of any age who are in need of supervision for a few short hours. A babysitter’s main taskis to watch the children, play with them and possibly put them to bed. Babysitters usually work on a specific occasion (date night) or could be on a regular schedule (after-school babysitters). Many babysitters (when not a sibling) are trained in basic skills like CPR and first aid. They usually work for an hourly rate which is agreed upon. Additional services can be added such as cooking, tutoring and light housekeeping. It’s important to discuss expectations of the babysitter prior to commencement of their first booking. Here at FAB Nannies our entire team consists of nannies. We do this in order to maintain the highest integrity of staff and services provided to you, our valued clients.
When we think of a Nanny we automatically think of a high pitched squeaky voiced female who lived with and cared for the 3 children of a Broadway show producer. Although the show was very entertaining and gave a small insight into the role of a comedic Nanny, it didn’t truly indicate the hard work and skill required, I would like to provide a little more information below.
A Nanny is invested in a child’s development and well-being. It’s a nanny’s responsibility to create daily schedules and engage in activities to ensure healthy mental, physical and emotional growth in the children they care for while parents work. Most nannies will be tasked with preparing meals, helping with light household work (nannies are not cleaners) driving the children to and from activities and assisting with homework.
Full time Nannies often become part of the family, bonding with the children in a different way than parents do. Some families consider their nannies co-parents or partners in parenting, getting info from their nannies on their child’s development and interests or asking their nannies to help their kids cope with the ups and downs of life. It is imperative not to blur lines of authority or role descriptions by creating a nanny contract that lays out all terms and conditions of the job, including vacation time, sick days and much more..
- Your child can spend the day in a familiar environment
- Your child has one on one attention
- Flexibility – the nanny comes to your home – no picking up or dropping off – more quality time with your child
- Your child may not get as sick as often if he/she was in shared care
- As your nanny can help with light household duties you have more quality time with the child.
- The child builds a strong bond with one person and they may be able to help with looking after the child at other times.
Our amazing Nannies are available morning, noon and night as required.
Of course when related to the care of your children our nannies are also capable of cooking/preparing simple meals, bottle feeding and sticking to a diet plan and eating schedule should you require it.
But just to make sure you know. Your children are and will always be our first priority.
We have a very stringent application process prior to adding staff to our amazing team. The process begins with an expression of interest from the Nanny, then a face to face interview, checking of qualifications/experience, blue card issuance and references.
All our active Fab Nannies will have:
- Qualification in Children services OR Currently studying for a Qualification in Early Childhood OR Proven Experience working as a nanny/ Carer of Infants (e.g. Minimum 2 experience)
